The team
ASIC's Strategy Group is central to ASIC's strategic direction and policy setting. We have four core teams: Strategic Intelligence, International Strategy, Strategic Policy, and the Behavioural Unit. In Strategic Intelligence you will apply your research and analytical skills to understand products and markets, identify trends, and assess risks.

The role

As an Economist / Analyst you will be accountable for:
  • analysing ASIC's regulated financial markets to identify material developments, business model trends and potential poor outcomes that may harm consumers and market integrity
  • undertaking research on strategic and emerging threats in ASIC's regulated markets to guide ASIC's prioritisation and decision-making
  • accurately identifying potential and actual harms, analysing heir root causes, assessing their likely impact and priority for ASIC to respond
  • analysing a range of data and constructing accessible, useful insights and narratives from your findings and presenting in an engaging way
  • scoping, identifying and establishing appropriate research methodologies for individual research projects
  • preparing reports, presentations, briefings and correspondence on economic and financial market subjects for senior management and external stakeholders
  • assisting other teams and working across ASIC on multi-disciplinary team projects
  • helping build our next generation of data-driven tools to promote analysis of ASIC's regulated markets (working collaboratively with our business teams, IT and Chief Data and Analytic Office)
  • contributing to the Strategy Group's ability to influence, persuade and lead across ASIC.
About you

  • Tertiary qualifications in economics, finance, business or commerce
  • Understanding of statistical methods and good working knowledge of data manipulation and related data skills such as R or Python
  • Understanding of current economic and financial issues and their implications for ASIC in its role as a regulator
  • Understanding of how financial markets operate and what drives good and poor consumer outcomes including the role of competition
  • Ability to undertake qualitative and quantitative analysis to a high standard
  • Experience in effectively presenting complex information to different target audiences through strong business writing skills and verbal communication.
